Age of Mythology (video game, real-time strategy, myth and folklore) reviews & ratings

To me, the most amusing thing about the Extended Edition was that - despite being developed by SkyBox Labs - the game actually failed to load the sky box in campaign cutscenes, leaving the story set in an endless, starless, totally barren & black void. There is no "out there", no universe to explore, all the units are little puppets in a diorama for you and other gods to toy with, and that's weirdly fitting.

Im guessing that this one was not as balanced for online play as Age of Empires 2, but i didnt care about that when i played it. What i cared about was the campaign, and it was great. The overal plot is predictable, but you really attached to these characters and their misfortunes throughout the game. The campaign is also tightly designed, delivering new challenges to the player in every new level. Most RTS campaigns do little else than teaching you the basics of the game, but i really felt it was the main dish in this one.

What sets this one apart from the other Age games is the inclusion of mythological creatures, heroes and divine powers. These all have their strenghts and weaknesses, and i do feel that the game is pretty balanced from what i have played. Its definitly a slower paced RTS when compared to the Starcraft series, but its really satisfying to build your own empire slowly instead of simply rushing and killing off the enemy. Its very sparse on the micro management, which does make the game more approachable to people new to the genre.

Besides, it probably has some of the most awesome cheat codes ever made. Stuff that really needs to be witnessed to be believed. Even in the main campaign its easy to see that it is a humourous game that doesnt take itself too seriously.
