Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth is a pretty cool departure from the main Ace Attorney games
My history with Ace Attorney only stems from the original Phoenix Wright trilogy, so I was curious how they could match the brilliance of that trilogy.
Taking place sometime after the final game in the trilogy, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations, you follow Phoenix's rival, Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth as he unfolds a mystery regarding The Great Thief, Yatagarasu.
The gameplay is a departure from the original trilogy while also borrowing a few elements that made that trilogy so good and fun, to begin with. The game isn't point and click anymore. It has full movement gameplay. It also introduces a feature known as "Logic" which is putting two pieces of evidence and connecting them.
It does borrow the general idea of investigating the crime scene (except without the point and click) and does still have cross-examinations, pressing, and raising Objections.
Unlike the original trilogy, the game has no Court Cases of any kind, the game is solely dedicated to the investigations (Hence the title) and it does a great job at it.
What makes Ace Attorney so good is the moments where you are trying to find that contradiction and evidence... And when it finally clicks and you raise an "OBJECTION" and the music stops... And then the music becomes triumphant... That is one of the most satisfying moments in these games because you are actually thinking and it feels good. The game (like the original trilogy) excels at boosting your adrenaline with these moments and it's no thanks to the spectacular music in this game.
This game also provides a lot of fan-service to the original trilogy with small cameos to characters from those games. Fortunately, it doesn't really require that you play the originals though I would recommend doing so before playing.
This game does have some issues that need to be addressed, however.
This game does it worse than the originals... But the chapters (ESPECIALLY THE LAST ONE) Drag out for WAY TOO LONG where it becomes exhausting and taxing to sit through, There are some localization issues, and the game has pretty awful pacing
All of those (especially the first one) is a huge bother to me. It was more tolerable with the originals because at least they weren't consecutively long as hell. And the chapters that are very long in the originals are shorter than the last trial in this game which is so frustrating to sit through
Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth is a pretty good spin-off with new and exciting gameplay, old gameplay to not go too far, great characters, moments, music, and a lot of great callbacks to the original games. However, it has pretty lame pacing, localization, and chapters that really overstay their welcome.
Pretty good game nonetheless, Just gotta go into it with the mindset that it isn't as good as the originals

Despite starring Prosecutor Edgeworth, this game does not have you own novice lawyers with updated autopsy reports, but is instead almost exclusively focused on the murder investigation aspect. There are no courtroom scenes, but a lot of collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses. The system of cross-examination is present as in the other games, but here it is more about discussing with the other investigators on who should be arrested. Slightly amusing considering that in the main games the police usually arrests the wrong one.
The game has 5 cases with a somewhat loosely connected story about a smuggling ring, which to be honest, is not very interesting. It features a lot of classic characters like Franziska von Karma and Dick Gumshoe, which feels a bit like a counterpoint to the previous Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney[逆転裁判4], which sought to distance itself from the older games. The big issue with this game is that it feels extremely slow. Obvious things are being repeated over and over and it takes so long until the cases get anywhere. The game is not longer than the other ones in the franchise, but it certainly feels so at times. It does pick up a bit towards the end, but overall this is probably the weakest entry to date.

I first played this game when I was 13. I didn't like it. It felt a bit too sluggish and all over the place. So I never actually finished it. Part of that was my own fault, though, because I would put the game down for weeks at a time which, when you do that with an Ace Attorney game, it essentially makes the current case impossible to finish without just doing it off of a guide. So I just eventually quit playing it somewhere in the last case, and that's how it was for almost 7 years.
I decided to replay it a couple weeks ago. From the start. And it's better than I remembered. I still think it's one of the weaker Ace Attorney games, but there still is a lot of good here. And it's nice to have finally finished it. Because not having finished it and thus not being able to really play its sequel have haunted me as a supposed "Ace Attorney fan" for years.

Almost finished this. The crime investigation part is fine, but the story is saddled with the annoying Ace Attorney-isms of regurgitated one-note characters and a misunderstanding of the gravity of the situation, and in Investigations 1, the increasingly recursive flashback sequences just gave me a headache, and made it feel like they couldn't tell a proper story, despite the great political angle in chapter four.

surprised this one is so hated on-i don't love it but i feel like it's a perfectly good entry into the series. the cases are complex, all the major characters are enjoyable (including the newcomers, i loved kay, shih-na, and shi-long), and many of the complaints people give seem to be in the other games as well (slow pacing, annoying side characters.. that ace attorney). not a Great game but i certainly like it more than great ace attorney, funnily enough.
will be curious to see if the second game is really such a big departure from this one, honestly i'm expecting it to be a bit better in story but fairly similar
it's crazy how much worse the writing is in this game than the original trilogy. difficult to tell, though, if that's because the localizer was garbage or if it was the case in the original japanese as well.
