This platform is intended for games released for
Apple iPod hardware prior to the iPod Touch. Games for the iPod Touch and other post iPhone Apple handheld products belong on
iOS.
Starting with the first iPod, Apple intended the click wheel interface of its iPod media players to be able to play games on the device's small LCD screen. The earliest models included
Brick, a version of Apple founder
Steve Wozniack's Breakout as an easter egg, and later revisions added it to the main menu. Over time, Apple would add three more games to the built-in selection on the iPod.
In September 2006, Apple opened up a section of its iTunes store for third party applications and games on the iPod. However there was no public SDK, and only established development companies were invited by Apple to develop for the platform. Apple stopped adding new games to iTunes in 2009, and ultimately closed the "Click Wheel Games" section altogether in September 2011.
