Commodore Amiga CD32 - picture
The Amiga CD32 was a 32-bit console based on the Commodore Amiga 1200 computer. Its obvious addition was the inclusion of a CDROM drive with multimedia capabilities. However, a CD32 could be outfitted with third party expansions to support disk drives, a keyboard and mouse and essentially became a functional Amiga computer. But as sold by Commodore, the CD32 largely could not tap into the extensive Amiga library as nearly all games for that platform were sold on floppy disks. Towards the very end of the Amiga's lifespan, CDROM drives were offered for the computer line which made them capable of playing CD32 games (including the CD audio soundtracks.) The CD32 was also capable of playing most games released for the Commodore CDTV, an earlier attempt to sell a multimedia version of the Amiga 500 computer.

Despite the impressive technical specifications of the CD32 which made it the first 32-bit console sold in Europe, financial and legal problems at Commodore led to a limited number of the consoles being released, and legal injunctions prevented the console from ever getting a full release in the United States. By April 1994, Commodore had filed for bankruptcy and less than eight months after its launch, the CD32's production ended.
