Square was a company founded in the early 80s releasing games for the
NEC PC-8800 Series and eventually for the
Nintendo Entertainment System and
Famicom Disk System consoles, where it gained popularity with the start of the
Final Fantasy [ファイナルファンタジー] franchise. Since then the company was mostly known for releasing RPG games exclusively for
Nintendo, with major titles such as
Secret of Mana [聖剣伝説2] and
Chrono Trigger [クロノ・トリガー]. In 1996 the company switched to releasing games for Sony's
PlayStation. In 2003 the company merged with
Enix to become
Square Enix.
