Discord is the name of the company behind the messaging and voice chat social platform of the same name.
Discord began in 2012 under the name Hammer & Chisel, which was a game development studio focused on developing mobile games. In 2015, Hammer & Chisel released Discord, which would go onto be their most popular piece of software by a wide margin.
Beginning in October of 2018, Discord briefly served as a game publisher after adding a storefront where users could buy and download video games on the service's desktop clients. The venture was short-lived, however, and was mostly phased out by early 2019 before being explicitly cancelled in October 2019.
In 2022, Discord released Activites, which is an ongoing collection which includes a number of small social network games which can be played with other users when in a voice channel. On release, Activities were exclusive for users who paid for their premium subscription, Discord Nitro, but as of May of 2023, Activities have been free for all users.
