Star Raiders

Star Raiders is a series of games originating from the 1979 Atari title Star Raiders. One of the most popular and revered titles for the Atari 8-bit platform, Atari tried at least twice to write a sequel, one of which was scrapped after Atari was sold in 1984, although an unreleased prototype surfaced in 2015. The second attempt, originally an abandoned movie tie-in to The Last Starfighter, became Star Raiders II. The eventual rights owner of the Atari name (and the Star Raiders franchise) produced a reimagining of the space combat classic with the 2011 game Star Raiders.

The original developer of Star Raiders, Douglas Neubauer considered his Atari VCS game Solaris to be a spiritual successor to the original.
