What are your favorite games that you WOULDN'T recommend to others
For me, I have two answers. First, any game that I loved that has picked up a significant fandom. For example, I love Undertale, but the game is so popular that most people already have a strong opinion on the game thanks to its giant online fan following.
On the other end of the coin, games with bad ports. Nier Automata was one of my favorite games of the year, but I can't recommend it as most of my friends are on PC, and we have received an Arkham Night level port job on the platform. It just makes no sense to advertise something that is broken on arrival.

There are a lot of games I personally love but understand why others might not. Deadly Premonition is one of them.
Probably Papers, Please. Convincing people to play a game about work is pretty hard.
i think most people would think Galah Galah is terrible but i really love it
Some examples for me are:
Resident Evil 6 which is my favourite of the series (for probably edgy reasons) which is something I would want to keep to myself.
Persona 3 comes to mind too, since many people think it quickly starts to drag on in the day-to-day part of the game and then the combat can be kind of unpredictable and seem unfair as you only control the main character, the pacing of the story can be considered somewhat odd, and many more quirks that are hard to explain the story significance/charm of.
And of course Nier [ニーア] is up there for so many reasons.

King Arthur's Gold. The difficulty curve is pretty steep, the community can be a bit harsh, and it's almost dead. It was pure heaven in it's prime though.
Definitely Viewtiful Joe. The action people won't take it seriously and the platforming people will not find it interesting. Everyone else will probably play it on Kids mode, abuse VFX and button mash their way to the ending.
Another one is The Wonderful 101 because it's a Wii U exclusive. Running into someone who owns a Wii U is rarer than running into a Japanese person in the middle east.

For me, it would be Uru: Ages Beyond Myst (and it looks like I'm the only who gave it above 4 stars). When I first played it, I was thoroughly impressed by some of the extremely detailed textures (considering my shoddy computer at the time) and the sheer size of the world to be explored.
However, considering the fact that one of the story puzzles requires you to stand in one spot for 15 minutes, there is no way to justify playing this game to someone else.

I also love that game, but not as much as the ones I consider 4 stars. I remember someone pointing out once how the problem with Uru is that at times you can't solve a puzzle moments after you know the solution, you figure out the solution but then you have to do some extensive work to progress, not very different from performing a chore. So like the example you gave. For that reason, you really gotta love the setting.
Maybe Pathologic, but I haven't even finished it yet so could I call it a favorite?
I enjoyed Marvel's Avengers a lot despite everything that was wrong with it (which was... most of it). But the characters were fun to use and that kept me rolling waaay into the endgame. Ask me again in a year if its worth the money.
The first game that comes to mind would be something like Animal Crossing Pocket Camp because of how predatory the gacha mechanics are. I could never recommend it to anyone, but I love my little campsite.
Brandish [ブランディッシュ] for the SNES is a game that has not been super well received, yet it remains one of my favorite dungeon crawlers.
I think the majority of people are put off by the controls and general style of the game.

dropping my couple of words on a 2 years long wilted thread. definitely Planet Alcatraz [Санитары подземелий]. quite trashy games with irritably uncomfortable mechanics, they are
for example, navigating your party members during both randomly encountered and scripted battles is almost useless as they're all easily killable and therefore completely wear out costly armor; playstyles are rudimentary due to how they are time-draining in comparison to simply tanking the enemies with overpowered melee weapons; so on
beside that, these games are extremely racist and homophobic, but i can get past all of that and squeeze some enjoyment out of its playfully vulgar texts, dumbhead humor, and surprisingly great atmospheric soundtrack. check it out, by the way
oh, and there's no english localization, so... yeah

^ as i'm replaying, i take my words back regarding battle mechanics. my squad is fully equipped with quite powerful weaponry and everyone makes it alive out of almost all random encounters. sure, complications are faced from time to time, plus it's a bit overwhelming to heal companions when sh' turns chaotic, but the progress is delicious
by the way, there's a fan translation in the making
