Animal Crossing
2001
Disc
Gamecube
Although the game suffers from struggles relating to inventory management (a staple in the AC series) and my gamecube controller having input lag, Population Growing is easily the best of the Animal Crossing's series. There's plenty of effort poured into making each NPC conversation memorable and entertaining. Like Wild World/City Folk, there's plenty to let my mind wander about - possibly more so than when I was an overlyimaginative child.

Nostalgic on account of being a game I played from my youth, but it pails in comparison to what population growing offers atmospherically. Boring NPC encounters and shoddily implemented community projects comprise a majority of the NL experience.

Bomberman Hero

Really comfy game. The controls are just about right and the experience is relaxed enough to make Bomberman Hero something fun in the moment, but ultimately nothing too special in the long run. That being said, Bomberman Hero is above Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time as far as 5th-gen n64 games are concerned, which is an actual unironic opinion I have.

An indie favourite. So much inspiration and passion has been poured into this game that it is impossible to ignore. The only thing keeping Cave Story from true video game perfection is a plot with some weaknesses and an absolutely bullshit method for attaining the good ending. The core gameplay could also do with a bit of refining, though what is there is already pretty damn good.

Pretty alright, though nowhere near as good as the first game. The spectacle and bizarre atmosphere that it tries to insist on only serves to make the experience of playing through the game more dull and uninteresting

The most impressed and pleasantly surprised I've been by a game in a long while. I went into Danganronpa expecting a campy troupey high school anime plot with the added novelty of having the characters kill each other and was met with just that, yet through some perversion of logic, it was actually gripping and enjoyable and may just stand as one of my favourite games.
Definitely the strongest part of Danganronpa has to be the murders and class trials. The aforementioned campiness in the premise allows for the murders to feel distinct, both in relation to each other and the mystery game genre as a whole. While the murders typically left me with a strong lead as to who the killer was, systematically going through and dismantling the perpetrator's arguments made the process constantly fun and engaging (even if I was tripped up at a few points by having multiple ways of presenting the same argument).
Unfortunately, the weakest aspect of the game has to be the characters that the storyline relies on. Simply put, there is neither enough time nor meaningful character development to make each of the student deaths impactful. I feel like Sayaka's death in particular was meant to be super shocking and sad, but it was apparent to me from the outset that she was being a turncoat and establishing a superficial relationship with Makoto so that she could later backstab him. Being manipulative was quite literally what her occupation entailed and as a result I didn't feel any sympathy for her when she died.
The twist with having a blackened sentence all the innocent students to death upon not being discovered also makes it apparent that Danganronpa's premise is way too complex for an interactive video game. I imagine the original idea for failing a class trial would be to have the blacked make their dramatic departure while everyone looks on with horror, which would no doubt influence the rest of the script and the way future murders are committed, especially with the whole accomplice thing that was promptly written off after realising that it would benefit nobody.
Apart from a couple of vices, I'd definitely consider myself a fan of this game. However, after hearing what I've heard about some of the other games, I'm not sure whether I'd consider myself a fan of the series. The later games seem as though they've embraced the shit anime writing that the first game was more reluctant to indulge in. However, if I've learned anything from the first game it's that I should go in with as open a mind as possible. I look forward to getting around to the sequels someday.

Bad, boring and not funny. Ending sucks my toes and so does bullet time battle. The more absurd they make the trials, the less interesting they end up being to go through, especially when the answer is immediately obvious.

Donkey Kong

GB
A game I respect for rising far above the calling of what a Donkey Kong Game Boy entry should be. There are so many nice tweaks and details that DKGB has - most notably the inclusion of Mario 64 movement in a title that somehow predates the beginning of that game's development. The bait and switch with the beginning of this game and the between-level cutscenes are also great. Where I find that the game comes apart stems from my natural interest in Donkey Kong, as well as how this game made the jump to a handheld. The concentrated, vertical level design of the arcade games have been traded for larger, horizontal stages with mechanics reminiscent of more traditional platformers. Mario's movement in Donkey Kong is naturally unsuited to this design, being incredibly slow and, at times, imprecise. Having to micromanage a rapidly despawning key was also a huge detriment to my enjoyment of many of the levels. As such, the stages which deviated from the arcade formula the least were unfortunately the stages that I wound up having the most fun with.

An interesting departure from Game Freak's entourage of repetitive subpar RPGs. The drill mechanic could be more fast-paced and dynamic, though what's there makes for a solid (yet forgettable) platforming experience.

Going back to this years after I last played it was super reaffirming. The entire way I evaluate games has changed drastically within the last two years, yet I somehow found myself loving the exact same things that I did when I first played it. It's truly inspiring and admirable how a guy with zero experience in game development managed to produce one of the most covertly influential games ever, as well as how sincere and lovingly put together the entire experience is. Game's timeless.

A really bad game that doesn't deserve the defending that it gets. Mother 1 is outright hostile with it's poor design choices and lack of balance. Through my exposure to this game over the years, I was of the opinion that Mother 3's ending would be more gratifying had I experienced this game first, though it's so vacuous and empty that I felt like nothing was gained from playing it.
On an unrelated note, I'm finally a real EarthBounder!!!!!! It's been seven whole years since I picked this game up for the first time, and I'm jubilant now that I'm finally be able to shelve this game forever. With confidence. EarthBound will always be my favourite game of all time, and I'm glad that I was able to see everything from this series through to the end. It's the least I felt that I could do with all that the games have done for me.

Mario's Picross

About as good as Mario's Super Picross, which is to say not very. I like how the archaeology aesthetic lends itself to the hardware limitations of the Game Boy when you play it in grayscale, and I've always appreciated the explorer Mario design, though the controls and tiny game board are still quite uncomfortable to deal with.

Very strange and unprofessional of Nintendo to release a Japanese game internationally without paying some intern $2.50 to throw together a rudimentary translation, but I can understand why. The content of the game is a huge missed opportunity. The zany and colourful vibe of the Mario series could have leant itself to some genuinely exciting puzzles and a memorable visual presentation, but the finished product is all very sterile and droll, much like every other picross game under the sun. The picross loop itself is fun, though I gotta dock some points for the microscopic game board and the absence of many features now standard in picross games. There are no repeat levels, though, so that simultaneously puts this game a million years ahead and behind of modern picross titles

A favourite of 2022 for me, though it's just a little too high IQ for me. Some of the love puzzles in this game require that you solve the most cryptic puzzles ever made or have an inhuman level of patience. The monster soul puzzles, however, are a bit too easy. It was probably beyond what they were capable of at the time, but there's a level of simplicity to them that's just too easy and predictable. When it's good, though, it's pretty great. I love exploring and vibing around the Moon world to the MDs.

Paper Mario
2000
It's okay. I got about five hours in and felt content with all that I'd experienced. The combat is fun and different, even when coming from the Mario & Luigi games. I appreciate the effort to streamline JRPG battle conventions by making the same tiny damage values ubiquitous across all battles. The frame-perfect blocking wasn't something I was initially a fan of, but the learning curve it offers is worth it when you're able to effortlessly deflect enemy attacks.
My one real complaint is that the writing seriously loses me. The witty and snappy script that this game is trying to have is actively hindered by how verbose all of the characters are, and I eventually hit a point where the script was so unstimulating that all information would just wash over me without being comprehended.
My favourite parts of the game are the Peach segments, which seems to be the consensus for many people. Seeing how the good Bowser troops integrated themselves into the world of the Mushroom Kingdom was quite novel as well.

Probably the best-designed game I've ever played and easily the better of the two portals. There's an astounding level of effort poured into the way portals are used and how that concept builds over the course of the game., rewarding the player at all times for thinking about what to do and how Portals are used (which is all the more shocking when you consider that the gameplay and puzzles are the weakest part of the game).
