Mega Man 1987
Cartridge
The start of one of my favorite series of all time. Fuck Elec Man and the Copy Robot’s fights, though. Same with the boss rush in Wily Fortress 4, screw that. I’ve beaten this one many times, most of them without save states.

Mega Man 2 1988
Cartridge
I love the eight Robot Masters’ stages (including Quick Man’s), but the game severely dips in quality at the boss fight of Wily Stage 4 (Boobeam Trap). I’ve played this game to completion less times than I have MM1, but I’d say that I’ve played this game’s eight Robot Master stages more than anything else in the Mega Man series.

Mega Man 3 1990
Cartridge
The eight Robot Master stages are pretty good, though even they can be tedious and frustrating at times, but the game becomes insufferable in the Doc Robot stages. Pardon my language, but fuck those levels. The Wily stages aren’t good either, but they are miles better than the Doc Robot stages. I’ve completed this game around five times in full.

Mega Man 4 1991
Cartridge
This game takes Mega Man 3’s strengths (without all of it’s numerous weaknesses), and expands them into an actually finished game: it has mostly great level design throughout it’s runtime (only Cossack stages 2 and 3 let down the unanimous quality of the rest), along with a banger of a soundtrack, improved controls, and a classic roster of Robot Masters. The only undesirable thing passed on from 3 is the tedious level design at times, but nowhere in this game does the difficulty spike even nearly as badly as 3’s later stages do. I’ve only beaten this game a few times, as it’s pretty long; the fact that it managed to leave such a positive impression on me should tell you how much I like it!

The level design itself isn’t too bad most times, but it is severely hampered by this game’s slow, clunky physics, which are a consequence of the Game Boy’s specs. Capcom would vastly improve them by the times of MMIV and MMV, though. I’ve only beaten this game two times, the first being on the 3DS Virtual Console, and the second with RetroAchievements. (I haven’t touched it since the latter playthrough.)

Beat the game as Beck; probably not playing it again as Gunvolt or any of the DLC characters though. Customizing weapons was fun as fuck as Beck, but is very bare-bones with Gunvolt, so I don’t think I’ll bother. Back is obviously the character the devs put the most time and care into, and he is definitely the most fun to play as.

I’ve fully completed this one about five times, and it’s a pretty great Mario game. Even though it’s not as new as it’s title makes it out to be, especially in retrospect, it’s probably the most original and interesting game in the NSMB series.

This one’s probably the second-most original game in the NSMB series, but it’s also the worst in the series, by far. It’s still a decent game, though, just not particularly so. I’ve only completed this game once, and it wasn’t worth doing any of the bonus content, like the DLC levels for Coin Rush.

This one’s not the best one in the series IMO, and it’s definitely the most bland entry, but it has enough nostalgia value to be my favorite by far. I’ve never 100%ed this one solo, but have done it multiple times in co-op.

Don’t have much to say about this one that hasn’t been said. I’ve beaten Bowser before, but I’ve never gotten all 120 Stars before. Maybe one day…

I’ve never completed this one, mostly due to the clunky non-analog controls. Decent port though, aside from those controls…

I’ve beaten SMB1 without save states, and SMB2J with them (because that game, even with a per-level save system, is bullshit.) I’ve gotten to World 3 in SMB2U, and I’ve gotten to World 7 in SMB3. Pretty good collection, aside from SMB1’s changed physics.

Fairly archaic nowadays, but still a classic, and progressed the state of the gaming industry just as well, if not more than, it’s arcade ancestors.

Like SMB2J, I haven’t beaten the NES version of this one without save states due to it’s near-excessive difficulty.

This game is near-perfect. I love it to death, man. The only gripe I have with it are the Purple Coin stars. Those suck huge dick. I’ve finished the game with Mario, having gotten every star as well. Haven’t done a playthrough as Luigi, though.

Unlike the first game, I’ve never completed this one. I remember more negatives about this game than the first, including more frustrating bonus levels; especially that one where you’re rolling on a glass ball with the star in it, trying not to fall off of a Rainbow Road-inspired slide. That one especially sucks.

A classic launch game for the Game Boy. Despite it’s numerous flaws, I quite enjoy this game. I’ve beaten both the regular game, and the “Extra Mode” unlocked after beating the former.

The screen size can make gameplay claustrophobic at times., but the game itself is well-designed, and feels like a smaller-scale sequel to Mario World, instead of Mario Land, the actual game that it’s a sequel to. I’ve only beaten this one a few times, as it’s large, open-ended world structure can make traversing the world map troubling at times. The levels are designed well, it’s just the world map that keeps me from enjoying them as much.

I’m really not confident on how to rate this one, but I’m sure I’ll have to dedicate some time to it eventually. I’ve only gotten as far as the mid-stages of World 2.

I’ve beaten the main three episodes, but only on the second-easiest difficulty. Got about five levels into the bonus episode before losing my attention span and not touching the game again. Other note: I played with the GZDoom source port.
